I recommend this book to anyone who has played the games and has read the first book. May 04, Matthew rated it really liked it. Popular covers? Quick Links! One Week Left. Not quite as good as Aspho Fields, but still pretty good. I love the historical background and filling in the gaps of the video game history.

There are some great human elements to this story, but not quite as well done as Aspho Fields. Also, the end of the book feels more like the end of a chapter than a conclusion to a story. As a fan of the video games and now that I've completed the second book, I appreciate the characters quite a bit and I feel like I know there stories better than I had wh Not quite as good as Aspho Fields, but still pretty good.

As a fan of the video games and now that I've completed the second book, I appreciate the characters quite a bit and I feel like I know there stories better than I had when they were introduced in the games. For a GoW fan, let it be war against the grubs or war against a new enemy, it's all going to be the same except that this time round the gears have to adjust themselves to the new threat. A threat which is more dangerous than the grubs.

Gears of War: Jacinto’s Remnant

A threat which they never saw coming for a long time or least realized it's presence. More histories get's unrevealed in this book which gives you a better understanding of the individual characters.

A recommended read for a GoW fan. Jun 05, Josephine rated it really liked it. Feb 04, Jasmine rated it it was amazing. Mar 10, Jacey rated it really liked it Shelves: On the pro side Traviss has a very sure voice and gets under the skin of ordinary soldiers better than anyone else I've ever read. Her characters are three dimensional and very human - intense and conflicted.

What I can't quite wrap my head around is the world.

Gears of War: Jacinto's Remnant Audiobook by Karen Traviss Obviously it's from an X-Box game so it's not Karen's world I think I might have liked it better if it had been and some of the parameters seem a little strange. I know nothing about the world so I bring no preconceived ideas to the books.

I don't know where the scenario is supposed to lead us for the start of the vid game. Maybe that's a disadvantage, maybe not. It's a world that has been torn by war for more years than our main characters have lived. Firstly it was a territorial battle, then a battle with the 'Locusts', murderous alien creatures that erupted suddenly from underground tunnels.

There seems to be little rationale for the Locusts' sudden appearance. How come no one even had an inkling that they were there?

Aspho Fields opens in the latter days of the battle with the grubs and explores both past and present for a small band of 'gears' their name for infantry soldiers. Jacinto's Remnant follows the same soldiers, mainly Marcus and Dom, but also Bernie female , Baird and Cole as the leftover human government decides to turn its own destructive weapon against Jacinto, the last surviving human city, It's about asset denial and killing the grubs by drowning them as Jacinto collapses into the sea.

Subsequently the remnant of Jacinto's population much reduced must be protected and led to safety. In the backstory we learn that most of the human population was actually destroyed by the deployment of the Hammer of Dawn - a super-weapon invented by Marcus' late father - in an attempt to deny the grubs assets worldwide.

The logic of it is inhuman and I don't quite grok it. It seems to go: Here's where - because I'm not familiar with the game - I'm unsure as to whether that idea comes from the author or the game developers. I suspect the latter.

OK, I just checked a gaming website and if their description was accurate Aspho Fields was pretty close to the game in terms of walking the gears through various firefights with Locusts, but this book seems to take them beyond the scenarios in the game into new territory. Basically I love Karen's writing and will read the next Gears book because she writes brilliant characters, but I'd rather be reading her Wes Har books or her Republic Commando ones.

Maybe if she's stepping slightly outside of game territory the next book will have fewer constrictions. I will read it, of course. View all 3 comments. I really am loving the entire Gears storyline. I actually began the journey with the game GOW3 so I started out all the way at the end of the story.

Just that game was enough to get me so interested in the characters that I had to read the books. What is Kobo Super Points?

This one definitely didn't have as much action as Aspho Fields did but if you're interested in the character development and just wanting some fill in of the time between the games then you'll get that out of this book. Humanity is trying to rebuild itsel I really am loving the entire Gears storyline. Humanity is trying to rebuild itself on a remote island where they hope they can be happy and plentiful in the new Locustless world but old enemies and resentments present themselves and must be dealt with.

Traviss has created not only an extremely interesting premise and cast of characters but has told a war story that is so deep and tragic that it's hard not to sympathize with the people. Her ability to create an entirely new world and still make it relate-able is wonderful. I love being able to learn about these people and although many of the reviews state that they didn't like the timeline changed throughout the story, I found myself looking forward to those sections.

I didn't start reading these books because I wanted the typical big explosions and lots of fighting war story, I started reading it because the characters themselves were so tragic and realistic that I just wanted to know about them and their lives. And to catch even a glimpse of the things that have made them who they are.

You may feel that the entire GOW franchise is about Marcus but it isn't. If you've read any of the books then you know that we never get to see anything from Marcus' POV.

Yes, the story seems to be revolving around things that are directly involving Marcus, but the true story throughout is how ALL of the Gears react to the things that are going on. Marcus' story just gives the characters something similar to work around so we can really see how different each character and their personalities are by how they all react to one single thing.

Jun 11, Jackson Hampton rated it it was amazing. Jacinto's Remnant is the fantastic sequel to Traviss' Aspho Fields. This segment of the story follows the decision to fire the Hammer of Dawn, as well as Marcus's fight to protect the Jacinto Survivors.

The part of the book really focuses on Victor Hoffman, and his internal struggles about firing the Hammer. It will kill millions of innocent civilians, and Hoffman doesn't know if he can live with that, seeings how one of those civillians is his wife, Margaret. The second part of the book follows Jacinto's Remnant is the fantastic sequel to Traviss' Aspho Fields.

The second part of the book follows Marcus and the rest of Delta Squad as they defend the refugee survivors of Jacinto. When the Hammer Strikes failed to stop the Locust hordes, the only option left was to, as you know if you've played Gears of War 2, sink the city and flood the hollows.

It's interesting to see the civillians harass, abuse, and even assault the people that are protecting them for destroying their homes. Anvil Gate , and bridges the gap between the second game and the third book. The novel was released on July 28th, Based on the blockbuster Xbox game, this is the stunning story of the men and women who stood between a planet and total destruction—and now have to face the consequences of their actions.

As the survivors flee Jacinto, they must contend with the last of the Locust, bent on vengeance, as they struggle to stay alive in an icy wilderness.

Jacinto's Remnant follows two storylines: The flashback storyline opens two months [3] after Richard Prescott assumes the Chairmanship of the Coalition of Ordered Governments due to the sudden death of the previous Chairman, Dalyell. Prescott wants to organize the remaining nations of Sera to counterattack the Locust Horde, but each nation is too worried about its own survival to spare its forces.

Prescott meets with his Cabinet and Adam Fenix, the creator of the Hammer of Dawn grid, to inform them that he will give the entire human population of Sera three days' warning to evacuate to Ephyra before it is closed off by the Fortification Act and the Hammer system is activated. Even though it will be impossible for many refugees to make the journey in time and the Hammer of Dawn strikes will destroy every human population center, dooming millions, Prescott asserts that there is no other choice and it is too late to do anything else.

Adam Fenix is able to work out a schedule for the Hammer of Dawn strikes, and despite his guilt over designing the weapons and being responsible for genocide, he too realizes that it is too late for any other plans.

In preparation for the strikes, the COG recalls as many Gears from around the world as it can, then issues the evacuation warning.

Afterwards, Hoffman and Delta Squad scout the regions wiped out by the strikes to search for evidence of the Locust Horde's defeat. Gears Of War: Jacinto's Remnant The flashback storyline ends as a human survivor they find refuses their help, blaming the COG for killing her family and leaving them "stranded.

Marcus personally kills Myrrah and dedicates her demise to his fallen friends, family, and comrades. Baird disobeys orders to use a secret weapon of mass destruction to destroy Locust forces and save survivors at Halvo Bay. Despite also killing the powerful Locust leader Karn, the squad is court-martialed because they disobeyed orders and Baird is demoted from officer to private.

A separate campaign, "Aftermath", portrays Baird, Cole, and Paduk in the hours before the activation of the anti-Imulsion energy wave. Microsoft announced Gears of War 4 at E3 on June Many civilians instead choose to live on the outskirts of the COG's walled cities. The three successfully fend off a COG counterattack only to have their encampment devastated by a new foe, called the Swarm. Kait's mother, Reyna, is captured during the chaos.

The COG, led by First Minister Jinn, pursue the group after erroneously believing they are behind a string of mass-kidnappings. The four reach a Locust mass-burial site, where they uncover evidence suggestion that Adam Fenix's lightmass weapon caused the Locust Horde to enter a cocooned metamorphosis state.

Their fears are confirmed when various Locust Horde soldiers attack them in conjunction with the Swarm. The group receives assistance from Damon Baird, now a successful industrialist, along with Augustus Cole, and Samantha Byrne. They battle their way to the Swarm's hive and defeat multiple Swarm and Locust monstrosities. However, they reach the hive to learn that Swarm's hive-mind has forcefully integrated with Reyna. Kait frees her mother, knowing she will die but will no longer suffer.

Reyna gives Kait a parting gift that belonged to her mother — a necklace bearing the insignia of the Locust Queen Myrrah. The game uses an over-the-shoulder camera angle when displaying the targeting reticle.

Gears of War is a third-person shooter game, with its core concepts being derived from Resident Evil 4 's "over the shoulder" perspective, Kill Switch 's cover system , and Bionic Commando 's swinging action akin to moving between points of cover.

While behind cover, the player can fire blindly and inaccurately at their opponent, or can look around the cover and aim carefully, though exposing himself to enemy fire; the player can also slide along cover, move between nearby cover, or vault over cover to race to a new point of cover.

As the player takes damage, the "Crimson Omen" appears on the HUD , becoming more defined as the player nears low health levels. The player can regenerate their health by staying out of harm's way for a short while. Should the player take too much damage, they will become incapacitated unless revived by a teammate; depending on game mode, the player may be able to recover from this state on their own, or may die after a short amount of time if not revived.

When a combatant is down, a member of the other side may also attempt to execute the downed player via a "curb stomp" or other brutal methods. As well, some types of damage will immediately kill the player with no chance of revival, such as explosive damage.

There are five levels on the first two games, but they are referred to as "acts" and each act is formed into a certain amount of chapters. Players in Gears can only carry four different weapons, with the exception of the fourth game, allowing two primary weapon slots that can carry weapons which include, but are not limited to: assault rifles, shotguns, a sniper rifle , grenade launchers and an explosive bow ; one grenade slot, which may be filled with up to four grenades of a specific type Fragmentation, Smoke, Ink and Incendiary , and one pistol-type weapon.

Players can either obtain ammo or swap out their current weapons with any weapon dropped by a downed foe or from those scattered around the various maps. Most weapons feature the "Active Reload" ability: either after a weapon has depleted an ammo magazine or when the player starts a manual reload, a meter is shown on screen, and the player can attempt to stop the meter in a certain marked area. If the player stops the meter in the marked area, their reload will be completed faster than if they did not attempt an Active Reload, and if the player can stop the meter at a specific section of the marked area, they will gain a temporary slight damage boost with each reloaded shot and a faster reload.

If the player stops the meter outside this area, their gun will become temporarily jammed and slow down the reload time. While most of the weapons are based on standard shooter archetypes, Gears's signature weapon is the Lancer, an assault rifle that has a mounted chainsaw bayonet which can be used in close quarter combat to instantly kill a standard foe.

Most other weapons also can be used to bash opponents in melee, or in the case of grenades, can be stuck to a foe, exploding a few seconds later. If the opponent spots the grenade, he or she can detonate it from a safe distance by shooting it.

All Gears games feature a campaign mode that can be played cooperatively with one other player. In the third game the campaign allows for up to four players to play together at the same time.

The campaign mode features several levels of difficulty.Gears of War Jacinto's Remnant is a fantastic book but a lot of people wouln't get it if they haven't played the games, which are rated "M" for being some of the most gory games out there. Friend Reviews.
